Pool Deck Gets a Fresh Start With Double Broadcast Quartz Coating

Old stamped overlays have a shelf life. When they start flaking and cracking, you end up with a surface that's not just ugly - it's a liability. That's exactly what we were dealing with here. The existing stamped overlay had failed pretty significantly, with chunks lifting and the base concrete exposed in multiple spots. Not the kind of thing you want barefoot kids running across all summer.

The first step was getting all of that old material off. Full removal, down to the slab. Once we had a clean base to work with, we self-leveled the surface before applying anything on top. That step matters more than most people realize. If the substrate isn't flat and properly prepped, whatever you put on top won't last - no matter how good the product is.

From there, we went with a double broadcast quartz finish in Solstice. Broadcasting quartz into the coating twice gives you a much denser aggregate layer, which translates directly into better slip resistance underfoot. Around a pool, that's not optional. But the double broadcast also gives the surface a really consistent, uniform texture that looks intentional and clean rather than just functional.

The Solstice color is a light, cool-toned blend that works perfectly in an outdoor pool setting. It doesn't absorb heat the way darker surfaces do, it complements the water, and it ties the whole backyard together. You also get that subtle shimmer from the quartz that plain gray concrete just can't pull off. It's a genuinely good-looking surface that also happens to hold up to sun, chlorine splash, and foot traffic.

This is one of those projects where doing it right upfront saves a lot of headache later. A well-installed decorative concrete coating on a pool deck should give you years of durable, low-maintenance performance. Skip the prep work, or go with the wrong coating system, and you're right back to peeling and cracking in a season or two. We don't cut those corners.
