Obsidian Flake Epoxy Floor System for a Shop Office and Kitchen

This one was a new build - a shop with a dedicated office area and kitchen space that needed flooring to match the demands of a hardworking environment. Bare concrete wasn't going to cut it. The owner wanted something that could handle daily traffic, spills, and foot wear without showing every scuff and stain after a few weeks of use.

We went with an obsidian flake system on this one. That starts with a 100% solids epoxy base, which means no solvents, no air pockets, and a bond to the concrete that isn't going anywhere. From there, we broadcast the obsidian flake into the wet epoxy at full coverage - wall to wall - and then lock it all in with a polyaspartic topcoat. That topcoat is what gives it the sheen and the serious durability. Polyaspartic is UV stable, chemical resistant, and cures faster than a standard urethane.

The obsidian color works really well in a shop setting. It's dark enough to hide grime between cleanings, but the flake pattern adds enough variation that the floor stays interesting. It doesn't look industrial-sterile. It looks intentional. That matters when you've got an office and a kitchen mixed in with a working shop - you want the space to feel put together.

What makes a flake floor system like this worth it long-term is the maintenance. A quick mop or sweep and the floor looks fresh again. No grout lines, no seams, no soft spots. It's a single seamless surface from one end of the space to the other. For a shop that's going to see constant use, that's a big deal - both for cleanliness and for how the space holds up over time.
